Biography

Dr. Eng. Ahmed Hamdy 

Dr. Eng. Ahmed Hamdy is the Executive Director of the African Union, Scientific, Technical and Research Commission (AU/STRC) and the former Head of Science and Technology and ICT Division of the African Union Commission (AUC) with an accumulated national and international work experience of 27 years out of which 13 years are devoted fully to Science and Technology policy for development. He successfully founded a number of Pan African Institutions and implemented several S&T projects, and policies. During his tenure in office, and in order to attract funds from Member States and Partners to implement the Africa’s Science and Technology Consolidated Plan of Action (CPA) and the African Regional Action Plan on the Knowledge Economy (ARAPKE) two books of projects were developed, which are the Book of Lighthouse projects and the ARAPKE Flagship Projects. Development of such bankable projects resulted in attracting more than 100,000 K€ as a direct investment in Africa’s S&T priority programmes.

He is the founder of the following projects and programmes ″ African Virtual Campus, African Union Research Grant, Connect Africa Research and Education, African Leadership programme in ICT, Internet Exchange Points, African Union Kwame Nkrumah Scientific Award, the Pan African Intellectual Property Organization, African STI observatory, the African Union Network of Sciences and etc″. Not only that but also he has developed and published several policies and strategies for the AU such as the African Union framework on Infectious Diseases Surveillance; African Book of Pharmacopeia; African Economy driven by innovation: Policy Analysis on STISA-2024; African Union Science and Technology framework for detection, identification and monitoring of infectious diseases of Humans, Animals and plants; Science, technology and innovation for post-conflict recovery; Science, technology and innovation for climate change; Enhancing Women participation in Science; Book of Lighthouse projects; African Regional Action Plan on the Knowledge Economy Book of Flagship projects; African Union Science and Technology Indictors guidelines; Rules and Regulation for the African Union Ministerial Conference on Science and Technology; Rules and regulation for the African Union Ministerial Conference on ICT; Youth empowerment strategy via ICT; African Union grant Manual; Africa ICT challenges and prospective; and etc.
Before joining the African Union Commission and for more than 6 years he worked in South Korea for the Korean Space agency, and Chonbuk National University as a visiting researcher, research projects manager and finally as coordinator for a number of regional projects in South East Asia. Dr. Hamdy published a good number of SCI publications on Geodynamics and GPS application.

In his early career, from 1993 to 2001 he was a member of the Egyptian National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics where he participated in a large number of Geomatics Engineering projects and he devoted his time to earn his postgraduate degrees in Engineering surveying and Geodesy. It is also worth to mention that during that period he had serviced several international and national companies as a consultant.
